I have heard of ones that can be hooked up behind the tower between the keyboard and computer, but can a program be installed on your computer also? How would you know?

keylogger is not a box all pc's have them what it dose is it monitors ALL key strokes from your keyboard anytime you hit a button it makes a note of it and they are all stored in a file in your PC somewhere..all the downloads you can get for it basically gets you access to the file and let you manage it..it works like a cop dose.. if your kids are view in porn or if your guy has a lady on the side as long as he is using your PC to chat to her you can bust them..now as for a progi being installed maybe open your program flies and look for something that was not their before..but if your talking bought a keylogger progie being installed "NO"unless you install one your pc will not do it but itself i hope this helps you and good luck

Im not sure, I always thought keyloggers were sent as a virus, which would make it a program I guess. I do know there is a type of program called a keymaker (not to be confused with keygen), that will randomly generate a password each time making it difficult for the keylogger to access. I dont know much more about it, but you can find them on the internet, just do some looking.

General awareness about online safety can keep you out of trouble.
See that your computer has least one antivirus, one antispyware, one firewall, and one temp files and registry cleaner on your pc. And scan your pc regularly. And run temp files cleaner after end of each browsing session. Apart from that create a limited user account on your pc and use it whenever you want to access internet.Use firefox browser for better protection. Create longer and strong passwords and change them frequently, at least once in a fortnight. Do not open email attachments in unsolicited mail or in the mail sent from the people you do not know.

Keyloggers can come in hardware and software. You dont know that they are there.

Keep up with housekeeping and spyware removal, keep antivirus updated and you should be OK.
