Senator John McCain uttered the following: "For me to stand here and ... say I'm going to declare divorces invalid because of someone who feels they weren't treated fairly in court, we are getting into a tar baby of enormous proportions and I don't know how you get out of that."

He's taking heat for using tar baby. Is it justified?

Should McCain be offended if someone says "pass the cracker" when they want a Ritz?

It means a sticky situation, not at all. Besides. the story of the Tar Man and Brer Rabbit is originally Cherokee, but made its way into Uncle Remus' stories. Nothing racial was ever implied by either version. Everyone knows that pine pitch is one of the single stickiest, gooeyest things.

The way he use it is proper, it means a problem that only gets worse when you try to solve it. Look it up. Sorry if you were offended by it, but we can't through out the English language because people don't use dictionaries.
