Well, they all disobey the "i before e except after c" rule, and
the "ei" combination is pronounced differently in all three.

They are some of the exceptions to the 'i before e except after c' rule. The other exceptions are 'seize' and 'weird'.
That rule only applies for the sound of 'ee' by the way, like 'believe' and 'chief'.

They're spelled ei, and everyone knows in spelling, the letter 'i'comes before the letter 'e' EXCEPT when they come after the letter 'c'. Or when it sounds like 'A' as in neighbor or weigh.
