One theory I have heard is that it is an effort to try to sound effeminate.
Another is that it is a signal to other gay or bi guys.
I lived with a gay kid for a year and a half (great roommate btw). Asked this same question a million times then. These were the only two plausible answers anyone ever gave me.
I don't have any problem with the gay community (at all) but I do find the false lisp slightly irritating. Why would anyone choose to talk like that?
Personally I think proper elocution is a sign of class & good breeding.

Nice theory Deathbunny,to go along those same lines maybe it's because when they were found out guys beat the crap out of them and ended up with fat lips giving them in effect , a lisp.So now, instead of going through the beating they just lisps ahead of time to let others know they're gay.

Wow, I don't know any gays with lisps, but I know a lot of straight guys with lisps. The Bible says that even Moses spoke with a lisp.

that never happens. Most of my friends and the people I know fall into the LGBTQ category and only one of them talks with a lisp, and that wasn't from choose it was because she was born with clef palate and after her surgery she had to learn to speak again. having a lisp has absolutely nothing to do with being gay.

Here's a theory...
If a heterosexual man wants to find someone to flirt with, he gets to assume every woman is straight unless and until they tell him otherwise. Most women, if he gets his assumption wrong, are not going to react violently or in a threatening manner.
If a homosexual man wants to find someone to flirt with, he can't assume every man he meets is gay. If he assumes wrong, he risks getting verbally abused, insulted, or physically hurt.
So, if, instead, he affects a lisp, it advertises he's gay in a relatively inoffensive manner with a lot less risk. He's identifiable to other men of like interest and improves his ability to find partners...
...less painfully.
Decent theory?

I don't know. I don't even think sexuality is a factor for speech impediments.
