when saddam was hunged i saw him with his eyes open, i think he must be dead already i couldnt tell him by hanging there

It depends on the way the rope is put around you. When public hanging was used in what we term 'The Old West' you were able to pay the hang man to place this neck breaking knot around you. I do mean the public hanging carried out by legal means and not a posse. Without that way of tying a knot hanging was a very painful and drawn out death.

First of, the correct word is "hanged." This is for the suspension by the neck from a rope. Hung is for what you do with a picture.
Usually, the neck is broken, but sometimes it isn't so the hanged person strangles. This may take a while. The person is usually unconscious as the rope shuts off the flow of blood to the head.
The heart usually beats for about 17 minutes after the brain is dead.
Sometimes, as happened with one of the other persons hanged, the head may be snapped off.
Dead people don't have their eyes closed as is depicted in movies, TV, etc.

The drop supposedly should break the neck, but that doesn't always work and death would not be instant. Hanging would not be one of my first choices of how to die.

if you are lucky the 3rd vertabrae snaps and you slowly suffocate. However if you are unlucky, one of two things happens; you get decapitated or you fracture the spain and suffer 35 seconds to 1minute 15 seconds of excruciating pain as your brain receives confusing signals from the fractured vertabrae and your lungs. Sadly you can't do anything about either because your hands are bound..Fun huh?

If you don't weigh enough though, you'll just hang there until you suffocate or somebody cuts you down.

normally you would break your neck, but if it doesn't break, you will suffocate yourself with your body weight
