My father's fairly judgmental. He basically says nothing whatsoever, then suddenly he'll make some jab at me or whoever else is around. I think he hates himself so he takes it out on others. He rarely yells or speaks with an angry tone. He just likes to slip in little hurtful things into conversations, then refuses to speak to me for a year or two, never on his own initiative, just when I feel it's time to be in touch again.

My mother. She tends to look at someone and immediately "know" that they are not a good person even though she doesn't know who they are. She generalizes as well.. one person who dresses this way and does something bad or not everyone who dresses that way is automatically the same.
Then there are my grandparents...but we won't go there.

My best friend of 25 years. Or should I say Ex-Best friend.
Sucked all the energy right out of me till one day I couldn't take it anymore. The funniest thing? She once said "Well! I try not to be judgmental of other people!!!" This was a dig meant towards me!!! I could never do or say anything right.
I am seeing a therapist now to try to figure out why I thought so low of myself to take it from her all those years.
But your FATHER!!!!!??????? I will give up a few of my sessions to you, so you can go figure out how to deal with that one. You only have one father. You can't change him, but you can change the way YOU deal with him. Honest do not be afraid of therapy -if you go to the right person you do not have to commit yourself for a lifetime. You might be shocked how just a few sessions can really help. This IS your DAD!!!
Any time apart is not good - life really IS short. Good luck hon!

My ex-girlfriend (from a long time ago, so it's not one of those recently dumped and bitter things).
Ironically enough, she styled herself as a neo-hippy with a firm belief in the mind-liberating powers of marijuana. She was all for people doing their thing, as long as their thing was hers as well.
The problem is she'll condemn anyone that doesn't fit into her worldview of life and hold a grudge forever against them. She once called me a barbarian because I happened to watch a boxing match. Although she smoked pot like a factory chimney, anybody who got drunk was just disgusting. My interest for economics just proved how much of a square I was underneath and she felt that was just despicable. Etc..., etc...

By the way, I'm sorry to hear about your dad. That's tough. My dad used to convey most of his emotions with yelling when we were kids. I have better relations with him now. It's normal to want your dad to be in your life, but you probably need to make your peace with who he is at some point. It will make you happier, and that's what you're aiming for.
