If you mean using them together, it depends on what specifically. Some medications can interact with herbal preparations, making them ineffective, or even potentially deadly. Discuss any alternative medicine you use with your pharmacist or doctor. Herbs can be deady too. Kava Kava was pulled off the market because it caused fatal liver damage. Ephedra can cause heart attacks.

If you are asking which is "worse", there is no real clear answer. It depends on what medical condition you have. I think we can all agree that if you have breast cancer the best option is surgery. Or if you have a bacterial infection of the blood (Sepsis) which can be fatal, antibiotics are needed and beneficial. Or if you have Type 1 diabetes (the rarer severe non-preventable genetic kind ), you will need insulin or you will die. There is no herb that can replace a hormone/pancreas. That's like saying a herb can replace a person's heart.

These are all reason to "risk" modern medicine. When your choice is death or modern medicine, the choice is clear. Some milder conditions can be controlled through means other than medication, and it is important to not use medication you do not truly need.

If you have pain, a cold, mild headaches, or rashes, alternative medicine may be a good or even better first option. Natural medicines often DO have potential side effects, since that is a possibility of any medication that is effective in any way. Another side effect is to become more severely ill if modern medicine is needed but not obtained right away.

It really depends on the condition and/or illness you have.

Alternative treatments are experiencing an unprecedented rise in acceptance and popularity in countries where western medicine is the norm. The possible problems that could come in to play between modern and traditional is that there isn't enough research on the cross tolerance of the different medications.

This is because there isn't that much research on traditional medicine. Combining herbs and tonics with pills could be a problem and we won't know until a side affect pops up.

Side effect for modern meds= read the label on side effects. Get ready to read for awhile. Just look at all the people, you will see the side effects.

Side effect for traditional meds= 2% of what is for modern meds.

Wow what a difference no?

I think the stats speak for themselves.

I wish you the best.

All the side effects of modern medicine (over the counter drugs, prescriptions etc..) are harmful to you long-term and overall health. Not to mention, they create more health problems and only mask the true problem. In other words, you are not treating the cause but only treating the symptom. Alternative health and natural , organic products work with your body , not against it and they have no harmul side effects. Interesting article to read on this subject is here

All medication is, is side effects of a substance. Some side effects seem to help with some diseases more than they hurt the rest of the person—these are the ones that are touted. The problem with alternative medications is there is no standardization of the substances and little if any documentation of efficacy or dangers in administration.

Look at the cure rate increase we have seen in the treatment of cancers like leukemia or Hodgkin's lymphoma or in the treatment of hypertension and cardiac disease. Formalized medication is expanding its potential for the effective treatment of most major illnesses and is under strict supervision.

Look at our steadily increasing longevity..

Probably not. The worst that could happen would be that the medicine might be less effective or it might now work at all.

There are about 100.000 people a year in the U.S. get hurt or die because of improper perscriptions perscribed by doctors, and then there are the occasions where they do the surgery on the wrong foot or hand.
