I want to make the tennis team really bad next fall. I am taking privet lessons, and group lessons right now. in the summer i will be taking a 2 hour class 4 days a week. but what i really want to know is what coaches are usually looking for. requirements are probably the same throughout many regions so if you are on the team, what did they look for. i am taking many classes to get better but i want to know what specifically i should work on.
Thanks

You are doing the right thing. make sure you get some matches in( this is key) . Play some local tournaments. Join the USTA and look on the web site to find junior tournaments in your area. Besides getting match tough it is the easiest way to find out what you need to practice. Learn how to play doubles, the strategies of doubles. Most high school formats are 3 singles players and 4 doubles teams so that is 8 girls playing doubles. If you know how to play doubles and when to move into net and move correctly at the net(follow the ball) A good coach will recognize that. Hit a ton of overhead smashes. Also spend as much time working on your serve as you do your other shots , players tend to get in the habit of just rallying in practice sessions and spend a little time at the end practicing their serves. Get that second serve down pat they say you are only as good as your second serve .Have your coach teach you how to hit top spin second serve and placement of it, that is huge, You have a big advantage because you will be playing a ton this summer and go into the fall totally prepared . Good luck you will make it.

You are on the right track with the lessons and practice. What you really need to do now is get some match play in. If you cannot find players in your area to set up casual matches look into joining a league. USTA has team tennis for junior players and league tennis for adults, T2 tennis in the south also offers junior and adult tennis leagues. K-Swiss is all about singles play.
You can lesson to death but until you get out there and play matches where the other player is trying not hit the ball to you - unlike a coach - you are not gaining experience. A team coach wants to see tennis skills along with court ettiquette and match play savvy. Good luck

Well coaches look to see if you can place the ball well, and if you can move the other player around. Also know how to get top spin and slicing the ball. Your serve should be consistant and be able to spin it. Try to have hard overheads. One handed backhand volleys are always good but not neccesary.

Good luck!!

the most important thing that you can do is play matches. nothing compares to matchplay. try to fit in at least 4/week. after all, this wiil simulate what it is really like. don't worry if you lose a lot. you will eventually become better.

good luck! reach for the stars!!!=D
