Do what I did...practice over & over & when you're done with that practice over & over again....there are no quick or easy ways to be a great guitar player without playing as often as you can!

In addition to practicing, WORK. ON. YOUR. PHRASING. This is the single most overlooked aspect of soloing in modern rock/metal music. When you go to record a solo, think about lines and phrases that work well with the music--and with each other. For a good example of this, listen to the solos on "Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osbourne or "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd...both are very different, but very soulful and fit perfectly with the rest of the music.

The first thing you do? LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN!!! Listen to anything and everything, even if it's not the style you play. Try to learn as many solos as you can and, by all means, steal from other people. Just play your favorite licks over and over and over again until you could play them in your sleep. You can get CDs with rhythm tracks in many different styles to play along with; the series I use is "Let's Jam". If you get the opportunity, join a band or even just a group of people to jam with. Go to live shows whenever possible, to "watch and learn". You'll probably want to learn and/or improve on little nuances like vibrato and harmonics. If you can, get a teacher to work with you one on one. But like I said, the most important things are LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

Hit the high notes and bend the sh*t out of them. Then add some "wee-da-la wee-da-l"a triplet hammer-offs and you're set.

you have to practice over and over and over and over again until you can do it without any screw ups. its not like a formula you just have to work at it.
