first... you don't "buy" itunes the only reason you need to enter a credit card is so that when you buy songs or movies, or videos or whatever, it charges it to your credit card. There are other programs that work (Media Monkey) but after a while, some songs cant transfer or just don't work anymore. I suggest just using iTunes.. it does everything (transferring ripping, transforming) automatically when you tell it too

You can get the songs from any source you want, whether it's a CD, the iTunes shop, or Limewire, etc...

The most common file extension is mp3. If you have another extension, iTunes may convert it for you. go to www.itunes.com and download it for free. Install it and plug in your iPod, and follow the directions on screen. Then, drag and drop all your songs into iTunes, and you can then 'sync' your iPod with your iTunes library. Be careful, because every time you plug your iPod in and iTunes opens, it will try to 'sync' your library, so if you delete a song from your library, it will delete it from your iPod (unless you change some settings to 'manual sync').

I hope this helped.

If from LimeWire, the music goes to your My Computer>C:>Documents and Settings>Owner>Shared (it helps if you copy the shared folder to your desktop) Then just drag the songs to your iTunes library.
