If you mean increasing the vocabulary (like the amount of words you know meanings of) then one method is to have a list of words that students look up in a dictionary. They can write down the meaning and then write a sentence using it.

For younger students, hearing books read to them helps them learn new words and their meanings.

I have to use many visual aids to teach my deaf students new vocabulary. Unless they have a true understanding of the word, they will never remember it. My goal is for them to use new words spontaneously, so they (the words) need to be presented with all of their meanings. For example, "file" could be a nail file, a file cabinet, or a folder in a file cabinet. It can also be used as a verb, to put the folder in the file cabinet. I would probably demonstrate the verb "filing" and show the objects for the other meanings. Also, in order to retain meanings of words, activities such as filling in blanks of sentences, matching words to definitions, and writing sentences with them are good reinforcement.

In high school I was given say 20 words. I had to look up the definition for each word and write it down, then use each word in a sentence to show that I understood the word. The teacher then gave a test with sentences with blanks. I really learned allot of words during my senior year (1971). I notice that these words oftentimes show up on the standardized tests with the comparisons.

I hope this helps.

We play the word of the day game...everyone gets their own word for the day...ie..today mine was turpitude.. and no I will not tell you what it is...go look it up...
We pass around the dictionary and holding it over our head so the person behind can read it we point to a word...that is our random way of picking a word...it's unique and the kids love it...once we all have our word we use them throughout the day...I have the list of all the words to try to incorporate into the daily curriculum...needless to say my day is not tedious...and so you see all you need to do is actually use your words...have fun and see how many words you can find that all mean the same thing...

There are lots of strategies out there. Here are some of my favorites: words splash, word walls, predictions, word sorts, concept definitions, mind maps...search anyone of those any you'll find a ton of information. The important thing is to be creative and don't take anything for granted (students may not understand a word, even though they have seen the word they may not understand the word).
