Saturday afternoon matinee in NYC in a couple of weeks.

Does matinee equal casual or is it still fairly formal?

Serious answers only, please.

If I wanted to be told to wear a bikini I would have just asked one of the construction workers I pass on the way into the subway for their opinion.

I think for a Saturday matinee business casual to semi-casual would be ok. Nice wide-leg dress trousers and a top or a casual everyday dress. Heels, a cute clutch, maybe a wrap for the dress (I always get chilly at the theatre) and nice simple jewelry. A nice sparkly necklace and maybe small simple hoops.

(or even in white, but that personal perference of course)

Or a dress:

(just the sweater of course to cover up with)
And shoes to work for either outfit:

Going to the opera is not the formal affair it was a generation ago, but probably most people dress up a little more than going to the theater.

I've only been to the opera in New York for evening performances. Generally for evenings, a suit and tie for men and a cocktail type dress for women (although some people do still wear a tux or evening gown).

Probably for a Saturday matinee casual "church" type clothes or busines casual would be appropriate.

Business attire for a matinee. Not casual. Not formal. Even a cocktail dress could make you feel out of place. By the way what opera are you seeing? I'm jealous. Lincoln Center is beautiful.

~Opera is no longer as formal as it use to be. Only opening night performances require you to dress to the nines. For a Saturday afternoon matinee, casual clothes are perfectly acceptable. However, that does not mean splattered jeans with holes or tank tops.

Just dress comfortably and enjoy yourself.

i would wear something simple and elegant...like a simple black dress, and some heels, no more than 3 inches tho. And i would be limited on the jewelry...maybe just some earrings and a simple necklace that sparkles. sometimes its a little chilly in the opera so maybe where a shaw with it.

Semi-formal, nice dress pants with silk blouse with a jacket, no chandelier earrings in the afternoon!
