Try looking at large shopping centres that are
competing with each other for lowest prices
like Walmart,Kmart and large book shops.
Maybe try quality second hand book shops
that only stock good condition second hand
books, maybe on-line prices are cheaper as
well...
You could look up book clubs as well,as they
tend to charge low prices if you apply for a
membership which might be worth while if
your younger son likes reading books and
wants to read other books as well..
You could also try your local Library as they
tend to buy large amounts of books, you might
be able to get a discount buying with them or
they might be selling second hand books..
Hope this help.!

I usually buy most of my books and movies from www.half.com. They have a fixed shipping price depending on the type of item (hardcover, softcover, etc) so you aren't getting overcharged in this area as so many sellers seem to do these days; the shipping amount is even lower if you order multiple items from the same seller. The conditions vary but you can buy brand new or used and the selection is huge. There are also "bargain bins" for those thrifty shoppers. Since the site is now owned by eBay you have the ability to check seller ratings as well. The only drawbacks are that most items are shipped media mail which can take a little longer than first class shipping and they require payment by credit card; you cannot send checks, money orders, etc. All in all I have had a positive experience with the site.
Currently, Eragon is listed on half.com at $5.88 for a brand new paperback (as low as $1.29 for used copies but a riskier buy) and shipping on a paperback is $3.25; brand new hardcover at $9.45 (as low as $5.49 for used, again a riskier buy) and shipping on a hardcover is $3.70. Of course the prices will vary as people purchase these.

Try Barnes and Nobles, they sell my different types of books. So you'll probably be able to find Eragon. Wal-mart has cheap books but I doubt you will be able to find Eragon. Wal-mart is not a book store so they don't have a wide selection. But Barnes and Nobles is, and even if they don't have the book they will order it for you or tell you a place that has it.

Check up on stores and booksellers that sell second hand books in your area.
Often they are in good condition, sometimes almost brand new, but much cheaper.
I've been collecting books since 13 or so but I never had a big allowance and brand new books in my country are usually twice the suggested retail price in the US/Canada/UK.
Throughout my teens and in University, I built up my book collections buying them at second hand booktores and fundraising second hand book sales put on by churches, schools, charities etc.
This is perfect for a young bibliophile.

You can find great books at the Goodwill Store or the Salvation Army Store. You need to visit regular, you can find books that are rare and if you are lucky first editions. Very inexpensive and some are in really good shape. Good Luck.

i've found some great books at thrift stores. also, call up your local library. most libraries have a sale every now and then. during these sales, my city library allows us to bring a box and fill it with books for only a few dollars.
