Looking for places where families are made really welcome to enjoy the ritual of sharing a meal together - rather than the kids being treated as a nuisance by the staff.

There is a cafe at Ashgrove called Locomotion which promotes itself as very child friendy. http://www.locomotion.com.au/ However, this is more of a cafe than a restaurant and I think are only open for lunches.

You could also try somewhere like Montezumas. The atmosphere is a little more informal than at most restaurants, they generally offer extensive kids menus, and the atmosphere is generally fairly fun and lively so it keeps kids entertained. There's always plenty of kids around when I go there, and the staff always seem happy to accommodate.

Here's another list of child friendly cafes and restaurants in Brisbane: http://www.bubhub.com.au/activitiesrestaurants.shtml

Kids aren't treated as a nuisance unless they actually are. If the children are well behaved they should be able to expect the same treatment as a mature patron.
Sizzler would be good.
Some local pubs have supervised childrens play areas equipped with all kinds of good gear. Playstations Xbox air hockey etc. RSL's and Bowls Clubs are good too.

A lot of suburban pubs are quite good with families, and tend to be not so expensive. I was at a place at southbank last night (can't remember the name, very trendy looking, opposite Toscanis) and noticed that their kid menu was really good - not chicken nuggets and fish fingers, more like child size rib fillet etc. It is a sad reflection on our society that people think McDonald is the only place to take kids.

Unfortunately there are not many restaurants that offer table service and are kid friendly. Because often kids being kids, cant sit still for very long periods, and this can often pose health and safety issues. So often anything with waited tables is out.

Any fast food restaurant esp. McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut etc. They are often tailored especially for kids, with the whole gymboree thing and "kid meals".

Unfortunately, the food can be quite toxic in the long term.

Failing this, have you considered take away from any of your favourite restaurants? Kids always love picnics.
