Just bought a low miliage older car, only 43,000 older lady hardly drove it mostly all parts wires & hoses, oil change, & a tune up, new plugs have been done also. Why is it hesitating when I try to take off from a stop sign or light, I have no pick up what so ever & it seems to be trying to change gears, is this a fuel filter or transmission problem? It kinda hesitates at lights and I just had water pump changed too, when I crank it up sometimes I have to give it a tap of gas or it will shut off but once i do that it starts right up & drives, engine seems very strong and 2 mechanics said they don't see anything major wrong the car just has'nt been driven much at all.
I'm told it has a GM engine in it & it's modeled after the Cavalier
Any mechanics help would be great????

i own a repair shop and I'm real familiar with those cars and they are a modified cavalier but they are good cars, sounds like yours needs a fuel filter put on it,and its very possible that the fuel pump its self is going bad,its really not hurt from being drove, but from setting, that's harder on a car than actually driving it is,id have it checked,it and the filter,id say you,ll find your problem with it there,my aunt has one of these is the reason I'm familiar with them, and she keeps hers in top condition, good luck i hope this helps.

I am not familiar with this year engine, but it should be fuel injection. This almost sounds like a carb problem of the past. With a carb, when you hit the gas pedal, the throttle plate would open, but there wasn't enough vacuum to draw gas out of the carb, so a little pump in the carb pushed extra fuel in. If the pump was bad, the car would try to die as soon as you hit the pedal.

I don't think your filter is causing this problem. I'd have to go with a vacuum leak or a leak in the intake system. Check all the rubber hoses around the air filter housing and the intake manifold. The rubber is 20 years old, so there may be a hose or two that is loose at the end or just plain shot and leaking.

It is almost the same thing as the cavalier.I would change the fuel filter first.Because it has been sitting so long,it may have water in the fuel.Drygas additive may or may not help.Have your mechanic check the fuel pump pressure after you get the old gas out.
