d=(3x/y)[(y+1)/x]
The x from the numerator of the 1st fraction cancels out, leaving 3, with the x in the denominator of the 2nd fraction.
d=3(y+1)/x

If the 2nd fraction is supposed to be (y+1)/x (all one fraction), then you get

3x/y * (y+1)/x = 3(y+1)/y The x cancels.

Or you could distribute the top to get (3y+3)/y

From there you could even divide both parts of the numerator and make it

3 + 3/y for your answer.

d=rt

distance = rate * time

Rate is average speed: mph or miles/hour
(Any "rate" involves division of 2 factors.)

In this case (m/h) distance (miles) and time (hours.)

Whenever you have some sort of a rate in an equation, one of the units in the rate (in this case time) will get canceled out by another element in the equation.

The other element (in this case miles) is on the other side of the equal sign.

Are you saying speed = 3x/y ? And time = y + 1/x ?
Then d = (3x/y) * (y+ 1/x)
d = y* 3x/y + (3x/y)*(1/x)
d= 3x + 3/y

d = 3(x + 1/y)

r = 3x/y , t = y+1/x

d = rt = 3x/y * y+1/x
= 3xy/y + 3x/xy
=3x + 3/y
=3(x + 1/y)

d is measured in miles.
