I no Dennis Potvin was on the islanders and someting like he hit a rangers young promising star in the 80's but what exactly happened? I am a rangers fan and i think most of the people who chant this at games have no idea who potvin is or what happened.

Ha-ha, I posted this as an answer to the most hated NHL players just yesterday.

Back in '79 or '80 the Rangers signed 2/3 of the best line in the world at the time...a pair of young Swedes who played with Bobby Hull in the WHA. They were Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson and they were downright amazing. Within a year or so, Denis Potvin took out Nilsson's knee on a cheap hit and Nilsson was never the same...tried to come back twice I think.

Years ago the MSG faithful used to chant "Beat your wife Potvin, beat your wife" after a charge of spousal abuse and "Buy a Porsche Potvin, buy a Porsche" after Flyers goalie Pelle Lindberg crashed his Porsche and died.

The first answer is correct but in addition Potvin was famous for a downright nasty hip check that took the legs out from under players. Sometimes he pulled it off cleanly and it was an awesome thing to see. Othertimes he got a little to low and buckled knees. For the time period in which he played was it dirty?? I dont believe so. It is just one of the many things that cemented the Ranger- Islander rivalry as one the best rivalries in sports. After the last game with Chris Simons brain fart, the rivalry should be as good as it's been in a long time. It is unfortunate that it takes injury or cheap shots to make a rivalry intensify. But, none the less the next game should be pretty intense.

It was 1979 and it was Nilsson ankle Potvin blew out with his hit. The loss of Nilsson was viewed by Ranger fans as the difference between having made the finals and coming up short of victory in the series.

Don't forget the "Denis Potvin beats his wife, doo-dah, doo-dah, Denis Potvin beats his wife, da-de-doo-da-day" chant.

There was also a "Potvin Sucks" song recorded. Check it out if you're feeling nostalgic.

You got the right answer, posted above, but for the record Potvin certainly did not suck. He's one of the all-time great d-men.
