To "lobby" means to advocate certain legislation or governmental regulations. Every time you write or call your Congressperson, you lobby him or her.

Professional lobbyists do this for a living. They may work for a non profit organization such as Greenpeace, for a labor union such as the AFL-CIO or the Teamsters, for a government such as that of Saudi Arabia, for a business such as General Motors, or for a business association such as the Chamber of Commerce.

A professional lobbyist is an expert in his or her field. Usually they know more about the ins and outs of issues related to their fields than most Congressional staffers. Therefore they are able to work closely with some politicians (or members of their staff) to draft laws that favor their positions. They also try to convince other politicians to support their position. They attend many political functions (including fund raisers) so that they can develop a large network of contacts.

Lobbyists come from all kinds of backgrounds, but most are lawyers. In college, many of them majored in political science before they attended law school. Depending on what issues they are concerned about, lobbyists may be scientists, engineers, accountants, architects, doctors, business people, or anything else.

Many of the most successful lobbyists are ex-politicians. An ex-general might become a lobbyist for an arms manufacturer, and he would probably have some friends at the Pentagon. An ex-Congressman may have some good friends in Congress who will invite him into their offices to discuss issues. Not everyone can get an appointment with a Congressman or a Senator. An ex-ambassador might get a job representing the interests of a foreign government.

How does one become a lobbyist? Companies and organizations are looking for politically savvy people who know about public relations all the time. If you want to lobby in Washington (instead of at your state capital), you'll probably want to try to get a job with one of the organizations there. It would not hurt to study at a Washington-area university.

No, you do not need to sell your soul to become a lobbyist (there are many worthy organizations that hire lobbyists), but most lobbyists do sell their souls. Generally, they do so more readily than most politicians sell theirs.

Some lobbyists do not make much money, but a large number have incomes of six or even seven figures. Of course, you would have to act like Faust to get a seven-figure income.

They are employed with special interest groups to influence the vote of legislators in the House and the Senate. Many times they were legislators themselves at one time. If so, they have to have not served in the house or the senate for at least one year. Many of the lobbyist groups have their offices on a famous street in Washingon, DC known as K Street.

A good way to get some experience would be to serve as an unpaid intern for one of the lobbyist groups while in college. I would believe that those choosing it as their profession, more than likely don't get paid very well. Many professions within government and politics are like that until you get some experience under your belt.

Selling your soul would probably be the best way to describe what you'd have to do in order to be successful, especially if you're going to go lobby, say, for the oil industry. If you're going to do lobbying, at least do it for something that is for a great cause, like the environment or something.
