Right after sunset, the planet Venus at magnitude -4 is the brightest "star" that can be seen at that time.

Hi Megan!

You just saw Venus!

Anyone in the world can spot the planet Venus tonight, if you have clear skies. It's the brightest object in the evening sky. Just look west, starting about 15 minutes after the sun has set. You can't miss it!

It stays out this evening until about 9:30 p.m. (Daylight Time) in most of the United States, until 8:30 in Europe and Asia, and until after 7 o'clock in the Southern Hemisphere.

If you miss it tonight there's no hurry. Venus stays in view each evening until late July.

On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings the 20th and 21st of March (the 21st in Australia, New Zealand and Japan) watch for the crescent moon close to Venus!
