In my opinion, the best choice for you would be a black Macbook. It is very small, very cool, and arguably the best of its size. It's base price is $1500. It is a very slick laptop.
The primary reasons behind this would be the greater security of the Macbook (Macs are more intrinsically secure, it's not just the difference in the amount of computers; Windows comes with five ports automatically open--although SP 2 for XP fixed that, you might not have that--and Macs come with none open. This allows viruses to get in. Also, if a virus gains control of the administrative account in Windows, they can screw with the most basic program files, but in OS X even the administrator can't, so the the operating system will remain intact, as well as all other accounts on that computer. I could go on, but I will spare you.)
Another reason would be price; when compared to a similarly configured Dell laptop, it is cheaper (Once again, it IS--you need to take into account the microphone and camera that is built into the Mac, as well as Bluetooth and other such things. I know that some other laptops come with 4 GB of RAM, and the max on the Macbooks is 3 GB, but that is because the Core 2 Duo processor can only address up to 3 GB of memory; the extra 1 GB of RAM is wasted.)
Also, you can run Windows (as well as Linux) on Macs anyway.
And finally, Macs have the "hip" factor. It just looks cool (in my opinion; but seriously, it's a common image to see the hipster college student with a Macbook.)
Just earlier tonight I answered a question about why think Macs are better than PCs. Check the Questions Answered section of my profile.

I agree with the those declaring their love for the macbook -- I LOVE MINE! All the aesthetics aside, I can run Windows (i.e., IE7) through Parallels, and I have MS Office for MAC that lets me open and share documents from work and home, etc. The key, though, is the operating system, which is very similiar yet so vastly different than a windows machine... Apple doesn't make the cheap stuff, meaning if you compared a Dell/HP/etc. and a macbook with similar specs, (e.g., same processor, memory, etc.) you'd find that these "bargain" windows machines are actually MORE expensive than a "base" model Mac, since the bargain-basement PC's have half or a quarter of the specs of a "base" Mac...

If your into games and can afford it go for an Alienware laptop and make sure you choose the upgrades they offer as options. If your into graphics (art) the Imacs rock - if you can afford it get the one with the biggest screen! (19" or 21"?). If it's more for work and production type of stuff IBM thinkpads are my favorites plus they have great security features and recovery options. You might want to check megamacs.com - they had some unreal prices on their merchandise, especially the Macs. Cheapest I've seen so far. Good Luck & Hope this helped!

until eventually you'll favor some truly good function, i'd look at your college and note in the journey that they grant a coupon value with particular vendors with them, or purchase an off-employ computer from easily among the major sellers at Ebay. I actually have both offered and offered from Ebay, and performance not in any respect had any complications.

What is your budget? If you're aiming for under $1000, you can get a decent custom Dell. If you're looking up to $1500 get yourself a Sony Vaio. Great media computers. If you're looking at up to $2000, get an Apple, no questions asked.

I would go with a Dell, they have great deals and an easy website to put the PC together you need. We have 5 in our house and never had issues with any (laptops and desktops)..

Get an apple. Their computers platform is not as subject to all the spam and contamination as a windows format. Easier to operate as well.
