I'm a 19-year-old girl who's looking for a change in employment. For the past 4 years I've been a lifeguard, which is great for getting a tan, but can only keep you happy for so long. I am thinking that I'd like to try bartending down the Jersey shore (about an hour away from where I live) but I am uncertain as to how to go about it. Should I go to one of those 1-2 week bartending schools or are they kind of phony? And if they are phony, what would I need to do to make myself hireable? Also, what are the best bars to work at down the shore in the Seaside/Lavalette/Point Pleasant area (specifically bars that a young, single, 19-year-old girl would enjoy working at)?

According to the US Dept of Labor:
Often, bartenders must be at least 21 years of age, and some employers prefer to hire people who are 25 or older. Bartenders should be familiar with State and local laws concerning the sale of alcoholic beverages. Check with bars in the area you want to work to see if they have age requirements.

Some bartenders acquire their skills by attending a bartending or vocational and technical school, but its not required. These programs often include instruction on State and local laws and regulations, cocktail recipes, proper attire and conduct, and stocking a bar. Some of these schools help their graduates find jobs. Although few employers require any minimum level of educational attainment, some specialized training is usually needed in food handling and legal issues surrounding serving alcoholic beverages and tobacco. Employers are more likely to hire and promote based on people skills and personal qualities rather than education!

If you do want to go to a bartending program, go to one provided by a community college or public institution, not a private company, so you're sure they will teach you what you need to know at a fair price.

Good luck!
