My sister in law came to visit us in chicago and she is 7 months pregnant. She is from Indonesia.

I don't want her to fly back home just yet because she is pregnant. She will have to have her baby here. What are the qualifications for medicaid? She cannot afford to pay for the hospital bill and I can't help her either. What should I do?

I do believe that has been one of the continuing questions due to the new federal laws.

The law clearly states you must prove U.S. Citizenship in order to receive aide to dependent children.

Try your Cook County Department of Children and Family Services. They will be the department that would have to issue the medical card needed. So they are the ones who would know for sure.

Cook County Hospital is suppose to take in indigent patients, also try there.

Hopefully your sister didn't fly here with the intention of getting free health care and delivering her child. I would suggest that she fly home and have her child there. I'm sure it would be easier than trying to fly home with a newborn.

Otherwise, I would call the health department in your area and see what services may be available to her. She cannot be refused medical treatment at the hospital, but she will be expected to pay for it.

Unfortunately Medicaid is only available to US citizens or lawfully resident immigrants, neither of which describes your sister.

As far as her prenatal care and Labor and Delivery stuff, you could try going to Planned Parenthood (link). They provide low-cost services for pregnant women. If they can't help you, they'll have useful resources (not living in Chicago, I can't give more specific advice).

Medicaid is not for tourists. I don't think you should send her back, that is heartless. If you really care enough, you could take out a loan and take care of it yourself.

Your sister is a tourist and should return home to have her child. She should have never visited if there's no intent to go home. She should not receive medicaid.
