a point guard brings the ball up the court and sets up the offense. So the point guard's main job is to create opportunities for his teammates to score. A shooting guard doesnt set up the offense, his main objective is to score. The point guard is usually shorter and quicker. A good point guard would be like Steve Nash, great passer and controls the tempo of the game but can score also. A great shooting guard would be Michael Jordan. He can score almost at will. and in Jordan's case he can do almost anything at will on the court, but you get the point

Pg...is supposed to handle the ball like others have said, but they are also supposed to get their teamates shots. They are supposed to hang back on offense to stop the other teams from getting easy fast break points. They are also supposed in most systems manage the team on the floor....run the offense....make sure everyone is where they are supposed to be....set the tempo of the game....

SG's basically are supposed to score....whether that is shooting from the outside, driving to the basket, posting up...or whatever their job is to score. Lot of their passing comes from being doubled. They are the 2nd to 3rd ball handler depending on the team...SF like a Scottie Pippen/ Grant Hill type are known as being point fowards....meaning they do the job of a PG from the SF position....still meaning a SG in most cases is just meant to score as their main responsiblity
