I have always wondered this...when you go to McDonald's or any fast food restaurant's drive through window, how do they know when you are sitting there ready to order? Is there some sort of sensor? Are there cameras?

There are cameras and also when you drive to the speaker the weight of the auto trips a beeper at the workers' station. They hear the beep on their headset or from a mounted unit that is used to take orders. Simple.

They have sensors at the speaker.

Much like the sensors are traffic lights (there they have a sign saying "stop here to activate signal"

when you drive over the sensor the headset buzzes.and they can hear you. I remember once a lady drove up and started swearing at her kids. I guess some people dont realize that we can hear them as soon as they drive up.

Well, they train the drive thru people that take your order in many ways. One of them includes sensing when people are at the drive thru speaker. It takes a lot of training but after a while, they get good at it. =D
