Card with money is always the safe way to go!! You can always get him toys like wood blocks and learning toy is a good idea!! You can ask the parents if they need anything and maybe make up a big basket for them that has things in it!!

I found this site that had some cool things on it!! Good Luck

For a baby first birthday there a lots of choices to get a gift. What parents love most for a gift is clothes. If your thinking about a toy get a toy that says the recommnded age on the side of the box

umm the cutest thing to get a parent of a newborn son is one of those jars that hold the baby';s first tooth, or a litytle piggbank (a blue one in this case), umm or maybe the footprint things, parents like those cute things espccially for a little baby. i'd go with the footprint thing cuz the parent could keep this as a memory forever and it wouldnt be wasteful

I can understand your dilemma. My sister-in-law (who doesn't have kids and is rarely around them) bought my daughter a very expensive Casio Keyboard for her 1st birthday. It is now up in the closet for another few years until she can appreciate it. My advice is since you don't really know the baby, go safe. Diapers, baby shampoo, wipes, sippy cups, or a brush/ comb combo is always useful. As far as toys: books, balls, or dolls usually.
Good luck- diapers would be your cheapest bet.... :) $$$$
