Because not all women act like their on a period 24/7. Maybe she really believes the guy is innocent, who are you to judge how well she knows the man? who are you and how well do you know the woman to be making judgement calls. Half the reason so many men are abusive is because the women are just as bad! sorry to wake you up but its true! Granted in some instances men are just asshats but more often than not it takes two to tango and the law likes to side with women in spousal abuse cases.

A character witness is just that - a witness to his character, not a witness to any of the facts in the case. These days, most people spend more time with their coworkers than they do with their spouse just as a result of trying to pay the bills, so regardless of what you think, she may know plenty about his character. She is with him for long periods of time, and has surely seen him interacting with other coworkers and customers. Having said all that, it does not mean that the guy doesn't have a split personality - demon to the wife, angel to everyone else in life. There are lots of people like that.

Perhaps she is only speaking in terms of a business relationship. Were you in the court room when the testimony was given? Sometimes only business references are called in these situations.
