If you want some music from guitarists who relied practically of the science of music, I recommend classic rock. Guys like Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin are good ones in particular. His famous riff from "Black Dog" is all along one of the basic pentatonic scales guitarists learn. So you'll probably learn more true music theory from some artists who actually improvised each solo they did. Eric Clapton is another who comes to mind. When you look at these guys' guitar tabs, you realize they stick to a scale and never, ever play the same solo twice. You won't learn a whole lot of real music theory from modern rock/punk, besides, they took a cue from the foundations laid by Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Black Sabbath, and Rolling Stones. The classics are more difficult, but they benefit in the long run. So you have to ask yourself if you want to "memorize" or "understand". The latter is more respected by guitar-playing peers.
