Seriously folks, I'm not being a smartass. If a white disagrees with a widley held opinion by black people on a racial issue does that make them a racist? It seems that a lot of the problems come from not being able to talk about the difficult issues without the r-word coming up. For instance if I disagreed about crime statistics, slavery reparations, affirmative action, bell curve data etc. I'm well aware that there is not one unified black opinion on these things just like whites, but attempt an answer without getting too negative or inflamed.

Of course you can disagree and not be racist. I disagree with quite a few things that some people think a lot of blacks are totally for, but no one has ever called me racist for it. I think it's silly for someone to label you as racist for doing the same thing just because you're white. I think people of all races have individuals who are just too ignorant/defensive and immediately feel threatened when someone isn't agreeing with them.

If you are really "well aware that there is not one unified black opinion" then why would you ask a question like "Can I disagree with black folks..."? There is no way around the fact here that you are generalizing about black people as a group, in other words, representing a racial stereotype.

If you have a specific opinion you want to discuss, then discuss the arguments, don't make generalizations about how people react. Obviously you have expressed opinions that certain people have found racist--the race of the person who has said your opinions are racist should be irrelevant. Tell us those opinions, and we'll discuss the facts.

In situations like that it's the opposite of what your mom taught you growing up: "It's not what you say, but how you say it". When you are talking about the things you just asked about, it is not how you say it, it's what you say. I do not think if you disagree with something I'm talking about such as reparations for example, you are a racist. However, if you start saying reparations should not be given because blacks are lazy or they just want a hand out,or any other ridiculous racist stereotype, then you ARE a racist and have gone beyond simply disagreeing.

You can definitely disagree with me and not be considered "racist." I don't expect to agree with everyone's point of view, but, I am respectful enough to listen to it, right or wrong. I only ask that I am given the same courtesy when I express my views. I'm sorry that you felt the need to add the last sentence about people becoming "too negative or inflamed."

You can disagree without being a racist, but that doesn't mean that you won't be called one. Earlier today I had a similar conversation with my mom...I asked her why black people automatically take offense to anything whites say and if there is any dispute the white person is automatically "racist"... she said its because of a deep rooted subconscious inferiority complex that has been instilled, something they are rebelling against... Its a bit to explain....

That is really hard to answer, actually. I totally disagree with affirmative action and stuff like that too. I don't really see it as being racist. Maybe because I'm also a minority.

Yes you can. If you have a something to say other than ALL BLACKS commit crime.

Because of one really bad crime in one place that is a reflection on ALL BLACKS everywhere.

ALL Blacks get special treatment because of AA. I never have!

No Black has ever done anything good.
You can say whatever you like, Lord knows it said here.

TRY to see blacks as individuals.

You need to attend sensativity training just for asking such a question. I hear Mike Nifong will be teaching a course in it soon, after he loses his job for backing up that "poor black female victim" in NC.

Seriously, as you say, it depends on wheather you are talking to one black or a group of blacks....I can't explain why, but its just the way it is. You can have a very intelligent conversation with a single black, but as soon as there's more than one in the conversation, you're a racist. I seriously believe it's because of Jessey Jackson, Louis Farrakhan, etc. Blacks can do anything, be anyone, accomplish whatever they want if they will just get over the hatred spouted everyday by this bunch. ....More than Nuf said.
