Need Help! I have 56K dial-up connection. It may or may not
connect. If it does, it may only last 1 hr.or I may have to connect several different times, then it will last a couple of hours. My dial-up connections are ok,my modem log says its working OK,
My port log says the driver is ok. I've been quoted $80. just to
look at it. Any ideas? and How do I find a reputable technician.? thanks.

This problem is usually caused by your connection being slower that your pc thinks. It tries to download a the set speed but when it can't it disconnects. I've had this problem a few times when on dial up. Ring your ISP's helpdesk and they'll give a 'string' to put in your modem's instructions to cure the problem.

Call your TelCo up and ask them to "Please run a diagnostics on this line". This is normally something either a technician would ask or someone who knows what to ask would ask. To successfully run the test, the TelCo may ask you to disconnect ALL phones so the line is wide open. Usually, on the outside of your house will be a TelCo box which is screwed closed. Your house disconnect is in this box. Simply unplugging the modular plug (looks exactly like a plug for the phone to the wall) will disconnect your service. This is a customer box and you are allowed to open it. The phone company may then want a closed loop test (phones connected)....simply plug the line back into the box.

The diagnostic will tell the TelCo if there is a problem on the line. If the line comes back normal....then the ISP is probably shedding connections so that others can dial in or you have an inactivity time out on your ISP.

If you can not find an issue with a diagnostic test, you can request the telco send a technician. If there is a problem discovered that is on the customer side of the box I mentioned, there will be an hourly charge. if the trouble is on the public side of the box, they will remedy this problem.

either way, the diagnostic test is step one and the technician is step 2.........after that, you have the check your ISP dialup settings that may be disconnecting you. Step 3....come back here with all the steps you took and ask

try adding *70 to the beginning of the number to connect. This will disable call waiting while you are online.

$80 is a little steep for a $10 part....if the modem needs to be replaced....

Check the phone lines or call the Telephone company to make sure that you don't have any bad connections. They may charge you if you dont have a wiring maintenance plan through them.

Call the ISP....maybe the problem is on their end. There have been times where the account itself needs to be reset in order to have it work correctly.

Does it always happen at exactly 90 minutes? Or does it vary, sometimes dropping way early, sometimes lasting a long time? If not, it may be a default timer that your ISP has set up. Once you hit a certain amount of time, the computer you dial up to boots you. I would call them and ask if that is something they do.

Do you have a friend that also uses the Internet? Take you modem over to his/her computer and try it over there. Find out if it is really the modem or perhaps noise on your phone line.

If your modem works fine over there, bring their modem to you computer and see if it works OK.

If not, then the problem is probably your phone line,

All comes down to amount of ppl online, ppl trying to call your house phone *call waiting*... server load and pc load...

if it works for hours at times then generally no problem.... Maybe try another ISP

My old computer used to do that, I don't know what causes it, you might wanna check the phone book or send it back to the manufacturer for service.

if you have dial up, usually when some one calls you it may slow down your connection or disconect you

need to know what service is being used. it all depends on the company you are using as to how reliable it is. also if i was you i would look into dsl or cable if it is offered in your area as it is more reliable
