I'm a mom and I would like a shelf to put knick knacks on in the living room or a new silverware tray with compartments for the silverware drawer. Another thing that would be nice is a magazine rack that has 4 sides on it (like a tall narrow box) that holds about 12 magazines for next to the couch.
Birdhouses are so 10 minutes ago. Don't make her anything she has to finish herself either.

You can always make a spice rack for the kitchen. A jewelry box that you paint to personalize would be nice. You couls make her a small stool with a personalized painting on the step so she thinks of you every time she has to get something that is too high to reach. A mail sorter would be nice too. The important thing is not necessarily what you make, it's how you make it. Be sure to make it with love and care and make it so Mom will think of you every time she looks at it.

My favorite wood shop item is a wooden box about 2 feet by 1 foot. It has a hinged top. I used one as a mailbox and stapled batting and fabric to the other one to use as a footstool with storage. He makes the basic item in shop and then brings it home, and we do the painting and finish work together.

Make her a small box to put inside memories of you as the years go by. If you draw, decorate it, or decorate it with some pictures of you and her over the years. Maybe she can put a report card, or a good note from a teacher, maybe a picture from vacation, etc. It will be yours and mom's box that's all.

The ever enchanting bird house!
Or you can make a very simple but very useful napkin and paper plater holder. It is almost like a kitchen caddiy kind of like a tool box for the kitchen, napkins are held on one side and on the other side paper plates and there is a handle in the middle. It's nice because either you or your mother could paint it to match her kitchen motif.
