Elna's right. It depends on the type of modeling you plan to do: high fashion (runway modeling), print advertising or video (like t.v. commercials-etc.).

High fashion models generally have to be very tall and slender. Height is not as big of a factor for print modeling or video, although I don't remember what the averages are. Best bet is to simply call a modeling agency or talent company for a straight answer.

I think it depends on whether you want to be a runway (clothes) model or a photographic model. Runway models seem to run about 6 feet or more. If you are modeling hair, makeup, shoes or hands I don't think it makes a difference. Do a search on some of today's popular models or watch Tyra's show.

I think its 5'6 for women and 5'11 for men.
