I have an all day interview that popped up at the last minute and I need to call out of work. I'm not quite sure how to call out in this instance. I don't want to risk getting fired for whatever reason, even though I basically never take sick days. What have you guys done in the past when this kind of situation arises? Are they even legally allowed to ask you for a doctor's note for the one day? Or to ask what was wrong? Would saying I have a family emergency be a cleaner way of doing it?

I would just call and tell them "I won't be in today, I'm not feeling well." and leave it at that. They'll probably ask whats wrong, just blow it off with "I've been up sick all night" and add (depending on what you do at work) "call me if you need me". That will make them feel more secure that you are really sick and are at home. IF they do call while your out, just use the excuse that you fell asleep. People do this all the time, don't worry about it! :)

Don't call out. Schedule the day off with your supervisor. Most companies give you sick and personal days for a reason. If you have a stock pile of sick days that need to be used up, just tell your supervisor you wish you use your sick day for a day off. You don't need to make up an excuse (and risk the possiblity of being fired if being caught) or even tell them why you want the day off, just tell them you want the day off. It's always best to give just a little info than to give too much.

Just use a sick day. If it is just one day they shouldnt ask for a doctors excuse. Just say something like, you ate something that disagreed with you and have been feeling nauseated and stuck in the bathroom. Family emergency is fine but you may get asked on what nature it was when you get back to work. They wont ask about tummy issues.

Just call in sick. Many times when people are sick they are fine the next day... I wonder why, you think they could be interviewing as well?

Since you have sick days available, I would just call in and say you are taking a personal day and leave it at that. If you only miss one day unless it is written in your company policy they shouldn't have to know why you missed. Just say it was for personal problems.

say you have to go out of town to pick someone up who has an emergency, or say you ate something bad (that way you don't have to play sick when you get back). but if you have any sick days then use them. hardly anyones uses thier days for actually being sick! that would be crazy!!

Better check your company policy on calling out. Where I work you can call out and not give a reason. Personal day is all they have to know.
