When surfing the internet just like in space, you happen to collect "cookies" which is like particals in outer space and they happen to collect in your computer. You should have a file titled COOKIES on your C-Drive most of the time. But if you go to SYSTEMS TOOLS and click on defrag it will start the process and towards the end it will ask if you are sure you want to delete these files....Ther are four files usually shown and the are RECYCLE< HISTORY< COOKIE and another one that starts with a T. Click yes...don't worry it doesn't remove the files just the garbage in them. This clean up yopur computer for more space. After that go back to system Tools and do a SWEEP which is usually found just above DEFRAG. It ius like sweeping your kitchen floor. If you have a little clitch in your computer, doing this process might put a stop to that! LL

The memory on your computer is stored in fragments and clusters all over the harddrive. Your computer looks for easiest access point on your hardrive for storage (which is usually the biggest amount of space between clusters). After a while, it gets very disorganized and especially if your getting close to reaching about 80% of your hard disk's space capacity, it will have trouble locating or storing files fast because it has to do it inside a multiple number of openning at that point. To defrag your hardrive is to take all the memory gaps out from the clusters and combine them with other gaps to form a large gap for faster storage. It will also take your files that are stored in multiple clusters and move them in one cluster for faster access. Like I said, a noticable speed difference can be seen when your hardrive is at least 80% full.

I don't know but the other day while i was on my computer the words 'defagmenting your hard drive' just popped up and then after about 5 sec's it was gone. I did nothing at all, it just did it by itself.

It is called disc defragmentation.
start
run
type in: "msconfig"
choose selective start-up and check -load static v & d's
- load env. variable
click OK
go to start again-programs-accessories-disc defragmenter.
follow prompts.
After defrag: open system config.- click normal set-up
click OK and reboot.
This puts everything in order and gets rid of all the clutter so that it doesn't take the computer near as long to find things.
It is definitely worth doing at least once a week. You can go directly to disc defrag. in accessories and skip the first part but it will take three times as long to do. It really works. Good luck.

As you probably know, your computer only has X amount of memory. Or space for stuff. All of it's stuff is scattered all along the hard disc and is taking up lots of room. Think about a garbage bag full of water. Try to keep that garbage bag in a small shape. You can't do it. Defragging your computer takes all of that loose stuff and compresses it all into an organized fashion on your disc. More or less, it's putting all your eggs in one basket so the other baskets are free for other eggs.

Windows Disk Defragmenter is a computer program included in Microsoft Windows designed to increase access speed (and sometimes increase the amount of usable space) by rearranging files stored on a disk to occupy contiguous storage locations, or defragmenting.

Over time as you delete and add files and programs to the hard-drive the files can get fragmented, meaning split into varied parts of the hd, instead of stored in contiguous blocks. Defrag puts them back into contiguous blocks. It's a good idea to run Defrag now and then, but not too often, depends how often you delete and then add things on your system. For most people running it a couple of times a year is sufficient.

It means taking the bits of used space that is scattered about and putting it all together in a neat pile so the unused space can have it's own neat pile. When everything is nice and neat, it runs better.
Go to System Tools and click on Disk Defragmenter
