It happens to me a lot when I go with my friends to a Mexican restaurant. The good thing is that the waiters know me and them so they always let me know if I'm forgetting something. I am glad to see there are still some people who are conscious of food being thrown away, congratulations on that. That's the reason when my order comes out wrong in a fast-food restaurant, I don't get it changed since I know they are going to throw it away.

I am a server and I would say 75% of the time people either forget it or I chase them out the door with it. Heck half the time the forget their credit cards in the check book holder... People are in such a hurry!
Also, no place can donate food to the homeless, although this is a wonderful idea, if someone was to get sick even if they are homeless the store would be responsible for the person. I went to Johnson and Wales University in Providence RI for culinary. Every lab day which was Sunday, we spent all day cooking food, every class contributed to 2 5 course meals served for lunch and dinner. Anything that was left over was tossed out. We aren't talking cheeseburgers and fries, but crown roast and leg of lamb and fillet Mignon, things that most people can't even afford to serve in their homes, but we had to throw it out because it isn't an option to give it away, there are too many laws the whole school could be sued if the person has an allergic reaction from something the school cooked. Homeless people don't always know their health problems, so if someone had an allergy, they probably wouldn't know it.

I am a server and I would say about HALF of all boxed food is forgotten. We just throw it away. I have stopped taking my leftovers home because I always forget them in my car for a few days until the smell comes...

Yes.......... and just lately. I was in a restaurant in Chicago where the rib-eyes are great, but to large to eat in one setting. I left the to go box on the table when I paid the bill. I had visions of heating it up with two eggs the following morning and really starting my day off great. UGG! How absent minded I can be.

I wish I HAD forgotten my leftovers!
The reason for this is that, here in Australia, we don't have many places that offer doggie bags. The food doesn't go to the homeless or needy either.
What a waste.
We should start doing that here in Oz.

I did this last night. And I agree. It's truly unreal how much food we waste. Too bad no one chased us down and returned our food to us. (lol)
