The pressure at the Earth's surface is equal to to the weight of the column of air in an imaginary tube of unit area of cross section extending from the Earth's surface to the top of the atmosphere. If this value is greater than the the sorrounding adjacent coloumns of air then this unit area of cross section is called high pressure area .On the other hand , if this value is less then it is called low pressure area.

High pressure is when the air pressure is high, which means that the air is stable. Low pressure is when the air pressure is low, causing moisture to rise and the air mass became unstable, this will often be associated with snowstorms and rainstorms

High pressure is an area where the weight of the air in a vertical column is greater than the weight of surrounding columns of air. And low pressure is the opposite where the weight of a column of air is lower than the weight of surrounding columns of air.
