well i believe the coin you speak of is an Indian head penny it was designed by James B. Longacre they were minted from 1859-1909, the year 1881 had a mintage of 39,208,00 its value is $6.00 i hope this information helps

a 1881 Penny in Good condition is worth about $4 if ti s Fine condition it would be worth $6, Extra Fine would fetch $15.
