You know what I mean... you get a glitch, you sort it, and then a window comes up and says "DO YOU WANT TO REPORT THE ERROR".
Yes, I say and duly report it.
But never hear anything back.
What's it all about?

you report a bug.
microsoft recieves the report and they get someone (probably a database not a person) to note the error.
if more than one or two(maybe a few hundred) people experiance the error they then begin to investigate and see if they can patch he operating systems to fix the error that caused the initial problem.
if they can fix it they will provide an update to what ever service module (dll etc fifle) they need to in the next monthly update.
hence why it is important to run the update tool either automatically once a month or manually to get the latest fixes to any problems that may have been discovered and patched.

as far as hearing back you will never get a personal response to any error report you send via the pop ups they are sent annonymousley. so how would microsoft contact you?
if the error happens again because you have not run an update between the last submission and the recent error and a fix or solutiion is now known you are normally presented with an option to click to get more information if you need to edit the registry manually it walks you through what to do. if you need to install a file it will take you to the download links you need.
remember to run the update tools of your programs at least once a month to be sure you are not missing out on any VITAL updates such as patches to fix security holes in a program or to close backdoors in programs for example.
the latest non microsoft problem was that of adobe acrobat reader V7 that had a major security hole, that is now patched and is released as v8 of the software.

They will send you back a report that is supposed to give you a reason why the error happened and how to resolve the issue. I have been told by a Dell tech not to bother as there are millions of reports but I myself like a clue as to why I got the error report and see if I can fix the reason for the error message. It will come up as a web site after you close the window, be sure to click on >more information,

Apparently, everyone at Microsoft takes part in an office sweepstake. Every morning, the put $1 in a pot and pick an error message of the day. They then pick a number - say, 1,074.

Whoever has the 1074th error message in the sweep wins the pot. I know this because my ex-girlfriend works there

Yeah!,I know what you mean.I have had feedback from MS on a couple of errors and how to attempt to fix them,i.e.(work arounds),but they are few and far between.Have you tried a program called Advanced Windows Care Personal from Iobit. It's free and simple to use.Go here :-

http://www.iobit.com/

This will help to fix a lot of errors.

Apologies,For those who want to know what all those error codes and numbers mean go here :-

This needs to be downloaded and installed, you'll get the idea.
Hope it helps.

Probably gets put into a poll, and they look at the errors that are sent in the most and then look at bettering that area for the next software they bring out.

Microsoft want's to see if there are big problems with their software. You don't actually get a message later on telling you what happened. It's kinda like a survey, they fix problems more people are having, not little glitches that ahve to do with thir party software.

Yes, actually ALL reports are printed out, the paper falls straight into a shredder, and the shredded paper is used as packing for the shipment of Vista!

This is a report I got back:

Cause: Unknown
Solution: No solution available

Then underneath that, it said: Was this information helpful?
