MAN! Do I feel for YOU!
For the longest I called those squirrels and rats that got in my attic OsamaBinLoud-in-da-attic and the AlQeda-terror-rats! I thought we'd NEVER get them out!
Those lovely rodents have to chew in order to keep their teeth short - so they chew holes in your roof and get in. Everywhere they go - they leave a scent trail so more can follow them.
You have to lay traps. Don't do poison. If they eat it - they go away, die, and rot. I was told that the poison I tried would dry up their blood so they wouldn't smell. Listen when I tell you - don't believe it!
If you don't want them killed, you must buy live cage traps. Contact your local County Extention Office and get advice on the best kind in your area. Any Ag and Feed store should carry different types.
If you don't mind killing them - get the huge rat traps, TIE cheese to the lure with thread - so they have to tug, and lay them against your beams. Rats use their whiskers to make their way in the dark by following the beams.
You must find all holes in your roof and plug them right away with steel wool until you can get the holes repaired. Get many roofers to give you an estimate on repair. Call your Better Business Bureau to make sure you check to be sure the company you want is reputable.
Get a spray bottle full of white vinegar and spray everywhere you believe they've been running. It destroys their scent trail.
Put little cotton balls soaked in genuine peppermint oil around in your attic. Don't ask me why... rodents don't like this.
Make sure your attic vents are screened on the bottom so they can't crawl in through them.
You may need to get a professional exterminator to help you. It is TOUGH to make them go away. Don't give up, hon.
I pray you have peace soon!

well i got squirrels in my attic to and eveyr time i hear them i go up but i can never find them so i think im gunna camp put up there with a bb gun and shot them one day, but if you woudl like takign a less active approach you probably have a hole somewhere where your roof meets the side of your house, notice the roof sticks out a little, its actually made liek that to let air into and out of your attic, you probably have a hoel somewhere in the facing there and need to fix it or even just put some chicken wire there to keep them out

The little buggers will chew on the wood to try to get out, so you have to remove them quickly. Try local humane society to get "have-a-heart" traps to trap them safely, then let them go in a safe place for them. I had one in my basement, destroyed the window frames, eventually went out window after I left it open, but did a lot of damage.
