lol -- Try Craigslist.org (or .com, I forget) and see if someone is bartering a computer in your area. You could trade babysitting or lawn care for a used laptop.

The cheapest I've seen was an Acer at about $399 last year. That was after rebates and discounts. The new models with Vista are not going to be that low.
Watch for sales ( Office Depot, Circuit City, Buy.com, and promo's. These usually come out around big holidays.

I got one for free one time. For signing up for a course at a tech college. Although, My grants ran out and I couldn't afford to continue the college. I kept the laptop and they sent me a bill for it. Only 300 dollars. It was 2002 and the laptop was a 2001 model IBM a21e. Was extremely nice machine, tough as nails. But it got a problem in the mother board one day and never booted again. I ended up disassemblying it and destroying the whole thing. Just out of curiosity. What was the question again? Where am I?
