Hi there! I can't really help with the Scottish highland dancing, but I am an Irish dancer, so I can tell you pretty much anything you want to know about that. :) First off, if you REALLY want to learn, as in you are serious about getting really good and even competing in the competitions, such as a Feis (pronounced FESH) which is a local competition where girls and boys come from all over the US to compete, or later on, when you are more advanced, to the Oireachtas (pronounced Or-rock-tas) which are regional competitions where you can qualify for the nationals and even the world championships, you will first have to find a school with a teacher who has his or her T.C.R.G -The TCRG certificate is awarded to candidates who have shown a competence in teaching the ceilí dances as described in Ár Rince Foirne and have also shown a competence in teaching solo dancers. In addition, they might have an A.D.C.R.G-The ADCRG certificate is awarded to candidates who have show a competence in adjudicating (judging) at official competitions, held under the auspices of An Coimisiún. Further It is a requirement of the examination that the candidate already hold a TCRG certificate prior to obtaining an ADCRG certificate. (So they must be a certified teacher of Irish dance before they can become adjudicators of Irish dance).

For a list of certified Irish dance schools visit this site:

I hope this helped a little. :) It would be hard to teach you the "steps" of the dances because each school coreographs their own steps. There are some standard moves that you can learn like cuts, sevens, over-two-threes, twists, rocks, clicks, etc but how they are put together and executed is for the TCRG of your school to decide. :)

You might want to take a look at Scottish Country Dancing. Done in a group, formation dancing with fairly simply steps but dances can get pretty complicated! It's easy to get started though. There are lots of classes, usually not costing much, all over the world.

Do a search on the the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society to find their web site and more information.
