You've got a chance for a quick fix if the rag is stuck in the trap. Pick up a "closet auger" (some call it a 'toilet snake') at the local rental yard and try that. If it can snag the rag when you give it a twist, and then you can pull it out, all's well.

I would try reaching in there first. If that doesn't work I would use a plunger. But use it not to force it down but to suck it back. So push down gently and pull up quickly. Try it a few times then try reaching again. If that fails use a closet snake. A normal snake can scratch up the porcelain in the toilet. If all else fails remove the toilet and replace the wax ring with a new one before you reinstall it. Also pick up a toilet lid lock.

see if you can hook it with a hanger or plumbers snake- don't force it through though. If worse comes to worse shut off water and lift toilet off the floor - all you would need is a new o ring to put it back on they are no more than 10 bucks and if you can get away with not calling a plummber it's way worth it.
Or maybe try to grab with tongs?- The drain in a toilet goes pretty close to straight down maybe you can reach with your fingers

Try a snake first, you can buy this from a hardware store. if that fails, remove the toilet and snake the toilet with it off. to remove toilet, turn off water behind the toilet. flush toilet, unscrew the water pipe from under the toilet bowl. then remove the two nuts holding the toilet down to the floor. then remove the toilet. buy new seal before replacing toilet. reverse removal procedure.

Sounds like a job for a plumber. My experience tells me the toilet will have o be taken off the floor and then a new wax ring will have to be installed. If after that, you can't get it out, then a snake should be used. A plumbers job.

Unfortunately, you are probably going to have to pull the toilet out, remove the rag and put the toilet back.

You dont want to let the rag get into the sewer line because then your hole house will become backed up. Call mike price plumbing. They come right out and can fix about anything.

try using a coat hanger... maybe that can snag it.
Or go down in the basement and open up the pipe... but that will be stinky and messy.

Personally, I'd just plung the thing and let it go.
