honestly, i would guess that some ask online is because they really don't know or understand but still try to... those people i try to help as much as i can... but i won't delude myself into thinking everyone's like that... they're some who're just downright lazy to do their own homework or at least read through their lesson in their schoolbooks and/or wikipedia... i encountered a question before that asked the simplest questions that can be obviously answered by reading through a chem book... i told the asker to read his schoolbooks and look it up themselves...
anyway, you can usually tell by the manner which they(those whore just lazy) ask (most of the time)... like they say in the MMORPG's, a newbie would ask you how to earn money/points in the game, a noob would demand for money/points to those who can spare it... hahaha..
as for 'googling everthing', i don't think there's anything wrong if you're googling for answers if you're actually learning from them... think of it this way, back when internet was nonexistent before, people rely on books for answers... and even if thye were from an older generation, i don't think those people are exempt from lifting answers off books the same way as people today lift answers off the internet... so it wouldn't really make a difference unless that is, in the process of looking for the answer, you learn the why's, the how's, etc and apply it next time instead of just demanding the what's then nothing else... that way, in the process, you still learned something...

Personally, I think most of these questions on here, homework realated or other can be Googled. Getting information from a search engine is not that dang hard. People should feel lucky they have the internet these days, us old people had to rely on the real encyclopedia books to bring home ( wasnt that fun carrying)Life is simple, people are lazy, cannot even look up the answers on the net themselves, what is this world coming too?!

They should do their own homework, but there are some posts that you can tell the kids are trying, and just need a little redefining or nudge in the right direction. Some of these kids don't have parents available to help - so many families today have only 1 parent, or folks are working odd/multiple jobs.
And, the computer is one of the biggest things they'll need in the future - they're at least brushing up on those skills. I don't mind helping them, but I won't do it for them. I give them credit for being resourceful...

I'm with you, tamboz. With the 'No Child Left Behind' fiasco, educators are 'teaching to the test', instead of teaching students how to learn. Basic research skills have gone out the window.
When a question is obviously posted to get YA members to do the poster's homework him, I point him in the direction of his local library, dictionary, and encyclopedia, with the admonition that he'd have gotten the answer a lot sooner researching it himself. For example, earlier tonight, there was someone who asked where tapioca comes from. I found it in the dictionary in 10 seconds, and told him he could have done it that quickly, too.
Personally, I'm very disappointed in people who write out an entire encyclopedia-worthy article in response to these questions. I feel these answers deserve a thumbs-down.

I tend to only answer the questions where students are asking where to find a particular piece of information, and then I will only give them good places to start looking.
In my book, it's okay if you're overwhelmed to ask for help in how and where to look for information, but don't expect other people to do the actual research for you.

I agree and I my answers are usually: Please do your "own" homework!!! That is why it is yours to do not ours!! This is awful that kids get by with this, I don't mind telling them where to look, but I am sure not giving them the answers. What or when will they ever learn anything? This is really a sad, sad situation. They say "no child left behind", I say what a bunch of crap, why not leave them behind with a computer and a bunch of folks who will do it for them.

I don't have a problem with someone asking for help with how to solve something, sometimes it helps to have it explained over again. But I agree, I don't understand why someone would ask a question to which they could easily find the answer themself by googling it...

I wish we'd had something like this when I was in school! I didn't have anyone at home to help me with homework, so I was on my own. It would have been nice to have a big forum on which to ask questions.

I think these kids are never going to figure out that it takes less time to just sit down and do it rather than to have a bunch of people do it for you.
