It's just a matter of speaking up. I have a hard time opening up to people. I'm not an outgoing person. I wish I was. Then I would have a better social life. If I had an easy button, believe me, I would push it all of the time.

Start out with smalltalk. Say hi and ask them how they are doing. Then you can move on to their plans for the weekend. Once you are both comfortable with the "generic" conversation, you can move on to more personal things like favorite movies, career plans and freetime.

You also need to make sure that your body language is sending the right signals. Maintain good eye contact, but don't stare them down like a psychopath. Nod your head when they answer you or give positive reinforcement (say things like "right" or "that makes sense"). Try not to fold your arms across your chest. This let's them know that they aren't intruding and you actually want their company.

Keep in mind that worrying about what other people think only brings you down. So if you don't get it right away, try again. It's not the end of the world. Something must be wrong with them. I know you'll do great.
Good luck.

it makes people uncomfortable to do this but you have to have the mind set that every thing is about you (but please don't be a snob about it) don't studder, when you want some thing, make it clear that you want it and don't worry about whats fair or not the other person will just haffta grow up and get over it. And above all: when you don't want to do some thing say no, don't dance around the subject, say " No, i'm not doing this' "No, i don't want to do this" give them your explenation telling them why you don't, and then if they keep asking or telling you what to do, hold your ground and keep your voice firm allong with your words.

Use a psuedonym. That way, you can say anything you like. With some practice, you'll be able to do it in real life as well.
