I'm a Filipino-American. According to what I have read, Marcos took out Martial Law because Pope John Paul the second, who was the Pope at the time, was going to visit the Philippines. There were many reasons for the first EDSA revolution: 1) Marcos has almost all the people running against him either sent to prison or a worse consequence. 2) The shooting of Ninoy Aquino when he came back to the Philippines, who was Marcos' main rival, and people assumed that Marcos had something to do with it. 3) Most of the Filipinos were in poverty because Marcos took a lot of money from the governent and got greedy. 4) Filipinos didn't have really have a choice for electing other leaders, which was why some people thought Marcos was a dictator. I can't answer why they chose EDSA, but I can answer why the crowds got bigger. Filipinos started to believe that Marcos rigged the elections between him and Corazon Aquino, Ninoy's wife. I believe you should ask someone who was there during the time of the first EDSA revolution.
