Konrad is roght - it depends on what type of music you want to play. For heavier music, the epi; for general all-around use, the Fender. But...I will say I have owned both. The exact Fender strat (in white) and the same epiphone. The strat I really like. The feel of it, basically. I changed the pickups (and I would have on the epihone had I kept it). Quality-wise, both are pretty much the same. The nut on my strat broke and i had to replace it. I thought that was strange, but whatever. You should really try to go and play both of these - even if you suck, go put your hands on these guitars and play them as best you can. You will see -- one will stand out as 'feeling' better than the other. You don't want a guitar that doesn't feel good playing. (the strats are a bit more comfortable, in my opinion)

I am a bit partial to the Fender Strats. I have owned one for about 10 years and it plays really well. Also if you want to change out parts it's is easy and there are alot of interchangeable parts to choose from. They are pretty resilient. They are comfortable and light. The Epiphones are also nice. They are a little bit heavier but have a nice tone. The one thing I personally don't like about the Les Paul style guitars is that the pickup selector is at the top, so if you do a lot of switching back and forth you are probably going to find that the Fender 5 way switch is easier to use, since it's at the bottom. You will probably be happy with either. As far as color suggestions, you can't beat a fender in the classic black and white. The Epi... I would say the Transparent blue or wine red. Good luck and happy hunting!

If you're going to get a Les Paul, get a Gibson. Don't go Epiphone, they quality just isn't as good as Gibson. John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers plays a Strat and he makes great sound with it. I personally have a Strat, and it works great. The downside of it is that most of them have only 21 frets. (Not a big deal, you can usually bend up to the higher notes.) And as for color, that's all a matter of opinion. If you want a more classic color, go for Sunburst.

EDIT: To the answer above, I personally don't like the pickup selector in that spot, because if you are rocking hard then you tend to hit it and it changes the sound. Just my opinion.

Personally, i'd go for the Strat, ...BUT , I'd go for the full on "Fat Strat" deal , you can get 2 humbuckers and a Floyd Rose on that, don't forget to super size that order with Jumbo Frets. Color? , makes no diff.

i'd chose the les paul, but it depends on your style. if you want heavy, hard rock/metal tones, then chose the les paul, as it has humbuckers. if you want lighter tones, like for blues, then the strat is for you. for the les paul, the color i'd chose is either cherry sunburst or honeyburst. for the strat, black with maple fretboard. hope i helped. good luck
