-You are described by the rule... yet you describe the rule.

-As rules are removed, one becomes closer to 'ultimate understanding'. And that is a point you DONT want to reach - it proves to be a pyramid without a top.... or..?

-And meaning IS the story, right?

I dont want your answer if it is just 'no', or if it involves a quote of scripture.

I just need a kick in the head....... =) batter up.

of course not, i am a very religious person. me and my friend ned were discussing this the other day and he said god to him was like a 'set of rules' as you put it. so we decided to get into a heavy debate about it. he quoted the scripture from the book of job, it said, "for when he was a child, he was merely not before when to thou if not for when he art at the beginning of-est his childhood, hallelujah, jaysus!!" he was drunk when he quoted this........ and i asked which chapter that was in and he threw up all over my penny loafers!! his last argument to veify what he was saying to be true was this: "hey diddley diddley diddley daddley diddley daddley daddley ho........" then he passed out and threw up again. so i guess i win, god isn't merely a block of commandments that is inscribed on noah's stone-wear......... he is like the great ark that moses built...... er....... you know what i mean!! -signed, ja-ysus cha-rist

I have no clue what idea of God you're thinking about when you ask this but I will answer it from my, Christian, point of view.

God is not a set of rules. The only things God wants from me are faith and love. I dont know if He would want faith or love more... I would guess faith but in The Bible it says Love is greater but you don't want scriptures and I'm not off topic. I know that God wants me to live my life a certain way. He wants me to live this certain kind of life because it is one which will bring me the most happiness. We are His children and seeing us happy makes him happy. This lifestyle he lays out for us also allows us to grow closer to Him than other lifestyles do. (imagine the child/parent analogy of how a parent wants to become closer to their children and how they plan things like playing catch or family dinners etc to grow the relationship) From the outside looking in this lifestyle might seem dull or unhappy. However, as an eighteen year old male in today's culture, I know that the "godly life" is difficult to maintain. Alcohol, Sex, Drugs, TV, Radio, Internet... everything can lead you astray. I used to be on medicine for depression. I've been unhappy on and off meds. I was unhappy as a partier. Unhappy while trying to be moral but not Christian. I became a Christian in the past year and a half and since then I have had doors opened for me for work, new friends, better family relationships, become a better person, become more motivated, a better work habit, and most importantly... for the first time in my life I am truly happy. Personal experiences are very influential. Just because you dont see the example of Christ working around you doesnt mean it isnt there. just because the christians you know do the same thing as everyone else doesnt mean there arent christians who are "walking the narrow path" and living the godly life. If you need a kick in the head there is someone who can kick you harder than anyone else. Jesus Christ. The goal, for you right now, should be to get to the point where you WANT to live a godly life because you know that pleases God most (and gives you the most happiness). In the end I believe it is important to state the FACT that if you put happiness as the end goal you will never reach it. Happiness is something you wake up one morning and realize that you've had it for a while. You may have heard that (wake up and realize you're happy) before but I am here to testify that it is true. Chasing happiness is like chasing the end of a rainbow. I am 18 yr old college student from the suburbs of Michigan. (if that makes it easier to relate to me) I am a normal dude and I hope that your spiritual journey ends up as good as mine did.

I'll end with a quote of my favorite author C.S. Lewis...
"Without sin, the universe is a Solemn Game: and there is no good game without rules"

The answer to the existence of God is an absolute and resounding yes. One only has to open ones eyes to the natural forces around us and nature itself to realize that a creator is apparent. Man with his very limited mental abilities physical powers could not have produced in any capacity the intricate design and functions necessary for living organisms in any of it's various and complex forms to live, survive, procreate and heal itself. Man can duplicate, replicate and expound on the created. Man cannot create something from nothing. Scientists in their search for answers to mankinds beginings and emergence only serve to prove the existence of God.

To me God is not a set of rules, he is a person, and he has the key to meaning in life. But he did institute some rules, for our great benefit.

The laws of God (or rules as you call them) are laws of love. The first five commandments show us how to love God. The last five show us how to love our neighbor.

Can you imagine what it would be like trying to play games with no rules? Chaos!

Now imagine life with no laws. We could do the most horrible things to each other and no one would care. Humans are weak. We need help. We need rules!

If you are talking about the Ten Commandements, I try to obey them, but there are some in todays modern world where you have to break some....it just can't be helped. As long as you don't commit any major sin like adultry, murder, lust, etc. You will be on the right path. I hope this helps.

I guess all I can say is that trying to fully understand God is like a garden snail trying to fully understand the gardener.
