I have two dogs and a toddler grandchild. Spots are frequent. Often times I will just take warm water and a bit of dish soap to dab out a spot. Lots of the newer carpets are scotch guarded or stain resistant, and that usually does the trick. Once a year I have them steam cleaned and have the scotch guarding reapplied.

never soak or send your carpet for dry wash, it will ruin your thousand dollar carpets. Just use warm water and mix it with some (small portion) of detergen. Lemon juice works great on some greasy stains.

Take off your shoes BEFORE you come in the door, if you walk around outside, where sandals, take them off too. Don't let people lay their drinks around where they will be spilled. keep your feet clean, common sense stuff, mop your non carpeted floors on a very regular basis.Keep your surroundings clean, porch, foyer, etc.
