I am a cosmetologist and if you dont want to buy brush cleaner then you can use one part alcohol and one part water but always hold your brushes bristle downwards so that the liquid is not running up into the glue that holds the brush together it will ruin them.

Clean your brushes weekly and use shampoo. Fill your sink or a shallow basin with warm water and add some shampoo. Swirl your brushes (bristle end immersed) for 1-2 minutes in the shampoo water, keeping as much of the handle out of the water as possible. Rinse well in running water. Gently squeeze most the water out of the bristles, then press the brush head in a towel to speed the drying. Reshape the bristles into the brush's intended shape. Spread a clean towel out on your counter and place the brushes on the towel. Allow them to finish drying on their sides. When they are completely dry, store them as you normally would.

You might try baby shampoo, as the "soap". It will break down oils and residue without damaging the brushes.
