There still seems to be problems with Vista. I'd keep with XP untill Microsoft has sorted the bugs

Factors to consider...
1. How fast and powerful is your computer? (Vista is a Resource HOG so you need a Good computer to handle it.)
2. Do you have a 3rd party Graphics card like ATi or Nvidia? (you'll need it for Vista's "eye candy")
3. You need to see if the programs you are now using are compatible with the new Vista Kernel...A lot aren't that are with XP.
So you tell me...Personally my computer is Very Fast using XP Pro..but on Vista its at least 2 times slower..but worst of all is not being able to play some of my favorite online games with it...

I don't think VISTA has all the bugs and support drivers worked out yet. I would wait for the first Service Pack to come out first. It still seems overpriced too.

There are a lot of folks that are just as happy to hang on to XP. It has pretty much been fixed.

First, run Vista upgrade Advisor. It will test your software also.

Also check out your software and game mfrs. web sites for compatibility with Vista.

Then buy Vista upgrade.
Academic upgrade are not upgradeable but your computer will be obsolete before Vista is.

It will not happen automatically. You would have to make the decision to upgrade.

My policy is to stick with what you have if it is meeting your requirements.

Good advice is to almost never upgrade/buy something new when it 1st comes out. Wait for the bugs to be worked out. Even though all software goes through beta testing, there will always be additional bugs to be corrected.

So, if not necessary, wait for awhile.
