I am moving into an apartment that doesn't allow dogs and I can't get a cat because of an allergic roomate. I was thinking about something like a guinea pig, but I don't know much about these animals. I would like something fairly small, cute, and inexpensive (NO TARANTULAS!)

Get yourself a snake.

My wife and I bought one for our son for his 8th birthday. It is an easy pet to keep.

Depends upon what you want out of your pet. Since you are in an apartment, anything you get will be stuck/confined to that space and not really able to breath fresh air.

Bird's require a lifetime commitment (30 - 90 years!!!) - and everyday physical and psychological connection. Most also have dander that might irritate your roomie.

Anything with fur will still irritate your roomie. Especially small rodents (incl hamsters and guinea pigs) who have a high ammonium content in their urine that might send both of you outdoors. The exceptions might be a sugar gliders (constant cleaners) or Chinchilla (which uses sand to clean it's fur- also constantly)

However, both require attention and a daily dose of outside the cage romping.

If that's too much for you, better go with a fish tank. Saltwater is cool but high maintenance - unless you go with a full ecosystem $$$.

Guinea Pigs- they make annoying speaking noises and are really not worth the efforts
Ferrets- Stink, there is no way around it, even if they are bathed and cage cleaned everyday they still smell
Hamsters- What a boring pet, not to mention their bad temperments and poor dispositions
I would suggest Rats- Females tend to be more hyper, Males more snuggly and it is completely not true that male rats stink!!! Fish are nice too, they are calming and fun to watch, and there are so many pretty colors to choose from.

I would suggest a chinchilla. They are adorable. My friend and I had one each and they were sooo cute. They cost about $75 or $85 but if u could find a private breeder, it would be cheaper. Also check out the animal shelters. Chinchillas are so friendly cute, quiet, and the only cost is it's cage and the animal. They only need to visit the vet if they're sick or if they r pregnant.

If you have not had a guniea pig they stink . I mean the odor is awful. a lot of work.
ferrets are sweet but the same as cats you would be allergic.
I am not sure on this one but I would say a tree frog or geco. I haven't had either.
right now my celllar stinks of rabbit can't wait to get her back outside but we are in the middle of another noreaster. 10 inches of snow maybe more. cats mad because I won't let her out and dogs won't go out to pee. using the pee pee pad.

Get a rat, their like small dogs. However I would suggest you get a female rat unless you want a VERY stinky cage from the males. Good luck :)

Get a sphinx cat, they're hairless! They aren't known to cause allergic reactions, so maybe do some research on them?
